We have had a lot of customers buy the ERGO for the baby or toddler they were adopting. And so many of them have told us how pleased they have been with it, I thought I should write a Blog entry on it. The reason the ERGO works so great for these families is that usually the baby is not an infant and therefore too heavy to carry in a Bjorn-type carrier. The hip belt on the ERGO allows them to carry a heavier child on front without neck, back or shoulder strain. And they can always use the back and hip carry options as well. Because many parents of an adopted baby feel that increased body contact can aid in bonding between them and their new child, they like to be able to carry them around as much as possible both in the house and out. The ERGO is great for this because it is ergonomically designed to be comfortable for both the adult and the child and since it is a frameless carrier, it isn’t big and bulky either. Speaking of which, many families have to travel to pick up their child and it’s nice to have a carrier that folds up and tucks into a bag when traveling by airplane.

I recently went on a 2 hour hike with several other families. I had my ERGO front pouch that held sunscreen, a small digital camera, Kleenex, and a couple of snacks. In the zippered pocket of the ERGO itself I had a diaper and wipes, and on my back was my baby. I had my Nalgene water bottle clipped with a caribiner onto the black webbing part of one shoulder strap, we both donned our sunhats and we were ready to go.

Other than my water bottle, I had no added weight. The framed carriers that many people were carrying looked so heavy – especially those who filled up the ample storage area. And because it was a wide gravel trail, a few people opted to use jog strollers. One Mom was having a terrible time, because her daughter wanted to be carried, not strolled, and her stroller was so full of stuff that it was had to push.

When my daughter wanted to walk for awhile, I just unbuckled the chest strap and slid her down my back. Later I swung her back up in. It wasn’t a big ordeal, like with the framed carriers and when I wasn’t carrying her, I didn’t feel like I was carrying a thing.

So there we were in a long maze-like line for the Buzz Light Year ride – no access to a bench – and my 23 lb. 16-month-old (who is on my back) begins to fuss and sign “milk”. I knew that nursing was the only thing that was going to work and if I didn’t act quickly, the fussing would soon turn into loud crying. So, I loosened the hip belt a lot (she is 100th percentile for height, so I need the carrier to be as low as possible for nursing), let out the shoulder straps (they are always tighter in the back position), unfastened the chest strap, and while holding onto my baby, joggled her and the carrier around to the front position (a bit toward the side I planned to nurse on), re fastened the chest/back strap, lifted the top layer of my nursing shirt and she was instantly quiet and contentedly nursing. Not only did this whole procedure take less than a minute, but it was completely discreet. I doubt the people in line right next to me had any idea what I was doing. I say this, because I have often nursed (with a nursing shirt) using the ERGO and people say, “Oh look, she is sound asleep”. I can’t imagine what I would have done without my ERGO. There was really no options for sitting down in that situation. And holding her in my arms to nurse her would not have worked very well either – first, she is pretty heavy to hold for that long and second, she has a habit of pulling my shirt way up and if I am holding her with both arms, I can’t combat that – when she is in the ERGO, I have my hands free to maintain my modesty.

We got this question today from a customer:

"Hi there. I was very excited when I got my Ergo today. Thanks! I used it
immediately to do errands around the house and out grocery shopping. I
had no back pain, but I did feel some neck strain. I read a particular
online review that mentioned neck strain also because 'most of the weight
is on the shoulders'. Do you have any suggestions on how to correct this?
Maybe I need to adjust it a certain way.."

We get this kind of question from time to time, and there are ways you can adjust the Ergo baby carrier to place more of the weight on your hips so that you don't have this kind of strain on your neck.

My answer to this customer was:

"You didn't say whether you are using the carrier in the front or the back.
I sometimes have had some neck strain, while wearing the carrier in the
front, when I don't have it adjusted just right (if the last time I wore the
carrier, my child was on my back). First, the carrier SHOULD NOT be pulling
much on your shoulders. Most of the weight should be on your hips. To do
this, make sure your hip/waist belt is very snug and then adjust your
shoulder straps so they are somewhat snug, but not tight by any means - just
enough to keep the carrier in place. If you have the shoulder straps
cinched up too tightly, the weight of your child will transfer to your
shoulders. Also, you have to play around with the strap connecting the
shoulder straps together. If it is too tight then it will cause discomfort.
I hope this info. helps.

It seems like every time I try to drive around and get some errands done, my child falls asleep. I hate to wake her, it's often not convenient to sit in the car till she is done with her nap, and if I try to put her in the stroller she is likely to wake up or I am stuck pushing a stroller and a shopping cart. My solution? The ERGO Baby Carrier.

Not only can I easily transfer my child to the carrier (front position), but if she starts to wake up, I can pat her back, say shh, etc. and lull her back to sleep (hard to do when she's in the stroller). It's true that the front position isn't quite as comfortable for me as the back position with an older child, but it's doable and I have found that for short stops, I can even carry my 4-year-old in the front. I have even successfully taken my two-year-old in and out of the car for two different errands without waking her.

One suggestion ... if you normally carry your child on back, but are going to put him/her in the front position while sleeping, first loosen the shoulder straps. I guess it's because we stick out more in front.

I hope this helps you get some of your errands done more efficiently too.

Welcome to My Favorite Baby Carrier's new web blog. I'm very excited about this new experiement because I am looking forward to using it to share with you my thoughts on all sorts of subjects: ones related to baby carriers, and the Ergo Baby Carrier in particular, as well as more general ones I run across in raising my two girls.

To get the blog rolling, I want to put up our recent press release on how the Ergo Baby Carrier can make holiday shopping with a toddler much more pleasant.

_______________________________________________

(PRWEB) November 27, 2005

Relief For Holiday Shopping Moms - a Back Pack Carrier for Their Toddlers

Holiday shopping with a toddler can be a real challenge. Toddlers just love to run off in all directions and play hide and seek among the clothing racks. And strollers aren’t much help in trying to corral a toddler; they are difficult to navigate around a stores’ sales racks and also many toddlers just won’t stay put in a stroller for any lengthy period of time. Add in the huge influx of people into the malls during the holidays, and you can see why many a mom with a toddler just won’t go near the malls during the busy holiday season.

But there is a solution that really works to make shopping with a toddler easy – a lightweight Back Pack carrier. One of the most thoughtfully designed lightweight carriers is the Ergo Carrier – it is lightweight, ergonomically designed to be very comfortable, easy to use, and works for toddlers up to 60 lbs. Jane Rosenberg, founder of My Favorite Baby Carrier, enjoys shopping using the Ergo carrier because “Using the Ergo Carrier while shopping has made such a difference. Before coming across the Ergo, I found myself constantly chasing or losing my toddler in stores and really didn’t look forward to shopping. Now that I use the Ergo, shopping isn’t a chore. My daughter is always right where I know where she is (on my back) and the Ergo is so comfortable that I can shop with her in the Ergo carrier for an hour or two easily. And my daughter loves being in the Ergo carrier while we shop. So shopping with my toddler is now something we both enjoy – what a wonderful change from our earlier chaotic and unpleasant shopping experiences.”

For more information on the Ergo carrier see My Favorite Baby Carrier or call their toll free number at 800 485 5228. My Favorite Baby Carrier offers a 90 day money back trial on all their carriers.
